This course will discuss the life, interests and career of Doris Day. Born on April 3, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Doris dreamed of becoming a dancer. She was injured in an automobile accident as a teenager. In her recovery from serious injuries to her legs, Doris began focusing on becoming a singer. She listened to the great singers of the day like Ella Fitzgerald. Doris began singing with local bands in Cincinnati. Eventually Doris appeared on the radio. She was hired as a singer by Les Brown and became a well-known Big Band singer in 1939. She achieved commercial success in 1945 with two number one records, Sentimental Journey and My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time. Doris Day recorded more than 650 songs from 1947 to 1967. In the 1950s and the 1960s, Doris Day was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. She starred in hit films in many genres from musicals, comedies and dramas. Doris ended her movie career in 1968. However, she appeared in her own television show, The Doris Day Show from 1968 to 1973. Doris became an animal activist during the filming of The Man Who Knew Too Much. Doris was involved with the saving of endangered animals until her death in 2019.
