History of Christianity: Patrick’s Gift to the Celtic People
Mar 18, 2026 - Apr 8, 2026
Full course description
IN-PERSON COURSE for adults ages 50 and older!
After the fall of Rome there was no central authority directing the practice of religion in Western Europe. Patrick introduced the Irish to Christianity and they embraced it without bloodshed; yet still upholding their Druidic traditions. The Celts saw humanity as fundamentally good, living in harmony with nature as an integral part of God’s creation. This was contrary to the writings of Augustine of Hippo, that we were born into sin. Original Sin becomes the official teaching of Christendom, and Roman Catholicism reasserted its authority over Ireland at the Synod of Whitby in 664 AD; favoring the disciple Peter as the rock of the church as opposed to the disciple John, remembered as “listening for the heartbeat of God”. What would Christianity be like today if the Synod had decided differently?
