Description
Two sessions exploring humanity’s relationship with light and darkness
Part 1 – History of Night Discover the wonders and mysteries of the night. Explore the astronomy of darkness and the unique adaptations of nocturnal plants and animals. Trace humanity’s journey through the dark—from prehistoric rituals and medieval curfews to nighttime customs that shaped culture and belief. The session concludes with a virtual visit to Lakeview Cemetery at midnight.
Part 2 – Pushing Back the Dark: A History of Illumination Follow the fascinating evolution of lighting—from campfires and oil lamps to the Edison bulb and modern LED smart lights. Consider how the triumph of illumination has transformed human life, altering our cities, sleep, and sense of wonder now that true darkness has nearly disappeared.
