Description

This is a survey of sculpture from the realism of the Roman Empire, including the earliest Christian sculpture, to the return of classical ideals in the Early Renaissance. Because of the fear that life size sculpture would be considered too close to pagan idols, sculpture during the Medieval period went through an iconoclastic period where only small scale images of religious subjects were allowed. The return to large scale form happened only gradually, first by making appearances on cathedral portals, to finally the conquest of life size sculpture in the round during the Early Renaissance. Discover in this lecture how this evolution happened in the thousand years marking the Middle Ages.
