Description
Elyria produced noteworthy individuals who influenced events leading to and during the Civil War. This program will discuss two of them. John Monteith, Elyria High School’s first principal and early anti-slavery activist who served in the Underground Railroad, had an impact upon the beliefs of many Lorain Countians prior to the Civil War. Archie Fisk, who attended Elyria High after Monteith’s time there, served in the War and was instrumental in freeing thousands of Union soldiers from southern POW camps—and all without firing a shot! After the War he even founded another town named Elyria, now a neighborhood of Denver.
