Full course description

IN-PERSON COURSE for adults ages 50 and older!

Expressionism was one of the most powerful and transformative art movements of the 20th century, driven by a deep desire to express the raw, unfiltered emotions of the artist. Through bold distortions, vivid, freely brushed colors, and abstract forms, artists sought to communicate the intensity of inner experience. The movement began in France with Henri Matisse and the Fauves, then took root in Germany with Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter, led by Wassily Kandinsky. By mid-century, Expressionism found new life in the United States through the emotionally explosive works of Jackson Pollock and others. This art is charged with everything from ecstasy to anguish, joy to despair. Warning: this lecture may move you to tears. Bring Kleenex.
