NEW Monsters, Creatures, & Demons: The Underworld in Art
Oct 30, 2025 - Oct 30, 2025
Full course description
IN-PERSON COURSE for adults ages 50 and older!
From St. George and the Dragon to the Dragons of the Emperors of Tang China, creatures of all kinds have made their appearance in the visual arts for a variety of reasons. Some are evil denizens from Hell. Others are guardians of tombs. Some are benevolent protectors of the people. Some do menial chores like gargoyles who act as water spouts on Gothic cathedrals. Whatever the reason monsters of all kinds have been a constant challenge to the artist's imagination. Even Michelangelo, that patriarch of human beauty, conjured up hideous beasts. Please beware; this lecture may cause nightmares.
