IN-PERSON class for adults ages 50 and older!

This course will discuss the movie careers of stars who died way too young. First, I will discuss the life and films of Marilyn Monroe. I will talk about her difficult life on and off the motion picture screen. We will discuss at length 3 of her movies, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Niagara and Some Like It Hot. Then I will discuss James Dean and his 3-movie career. Note: The poster from his movie, Rebel Without A Cause, has been a best seller for more than 50 years. I will also briefly talk about his chaotic personal life. Then I will review the life and career of Natalie Wood. The daughter of Russian born parents, Natalie started in the movies as a child star. Do you remember the movie Miracle on 34th Street? I will also talk about her successful films as an adult, Splendor in the Grass and Inside Daisy Clover. I will also review her mysterious death.

This course will also briefly discuss 2 other actors who had brief movie careers, Heath Ledger and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Ledger did excellent work in the 2008 movie, The Dark Knight. He won an Oscar for playing the part of the comic book Villain, Joker. I will also discuss his success in other movies like Brokeback Mountain. Philip Seymour Hoffman was a successful stage and film actor. Hoffman won a Best Actor Oscar for playing the writer, Truman Capote in the 2005 movie, Capote. The movie tells the story of how the non-fiction best seller, In Cold Blood was written. Hoffman would receive another Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor for the Mike Nichols film, Charlie Wilson’s War in 2008. I will discuss at length Hoffman’s lifelong battle with drugs.
