Description

IN-PERSON CLASS for adults ages 50 and older!

Journey back to a time when courage, hope, and determination lit the way to freedom. Next Stop, Freedom! shares remarkable true stories from the Underground Railroad, with a special focus on Ohio and the Great Lakes as vital pathways to Canada. Hear how freedom seekers traveled by night, faced danger at every turn, and relied on a network of ordinary men and women who risked everything to help them reach safety.

Presented by Eden Valley Enterprises Artistic Director Bette Lou Higgins, this engaging storytelling program highlights the brave abolitionist captains and crews who ferried freedom seekers across Lake Erie while slave hunters pursued them. This version of the program places special emphasis on Lorain County’s role, including the story of Monteith Hall (now the Elyria Woman’s Club) and other lesser-known local connections.

Many people think of the Underground Railroad in terms of a few well-known places, like Oberlin—but the truth is far more extensive and inspiring. Discover the hidden routes, everyday heroes, and unforgettable acts of compassion that helped countless people find their way to freedom.

If you lived in that time, and someone knocked on your door seeking freedom, what would you have done?
