Originating with French literary figures such as Baudelaire and Breton, Surrealism was an art movement formed in the years after WWI that focused on the concept of “automatism”; the practice of creating art without conscious control. Artists such as Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, and Rene Magritte explored irrational imagery and the exploitation of chance effects to create representations of dreams that often look like nightmares.
